In this article, we'll talk about how does a championship work in iRacing and how you can join them.
First off, remember that on iRacing, you can choose between Road, Oval, Dirt Road, and Dirt Oval series.
Each of these offers a wide variety of championships you can take part in.
But how do the schedules work?
On iRacing, there are different tracks each week for every category.
In one season, there are 12 events spread over 12 weeks.
All schedules are available on the iRacing UI.
The thirteenth week is a transition week between seasons.
It’s a bit special because you can't gain or lose rating during this week.
It's a time to have fun and get ready for the new season.
As we mentioned in a previous article, you can join championships based on your license.
For example, if you have a D license, you can't register for series that require at least a C, B, or A license.
But moving up licenses on iRacing isn't easy and requires excellent race results.
You need speed, the ability to apply all driving techniques, work on setups, and manage the car in every situation.
But don't worry, by the end of this article, you'll discover something that will help you.
What about Endurance Races?
There are two types of races on iRacing: endurance and sprint.
For endurance races, you need to be part of a team with multiple drivers, while in sprint races, you're on your own.
When working with a team, you’ll need to agree on strategies and divide driving hours.
Endurance races are unique experiences, different from solo races.
iRacing also hosts the most important endurance races in the world, like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona, and Nurburgring, which are held in their full length.
Are there championships where I don't have to touch the setup?
Absolutely, this is the purpose of the Fixed Series.
The setup is provided by iRacing, and you can’t modify it, ensuring a more level playing field among drivers.
What if I want to run my own setup?
Then you go to the Open Setup Series.
Usually, iRacing provides some base setups, like the Baseline, which you can then tweak according to your preferences.
Of course, all cars have different parameters you can adjust.
For example, there are different settings for an oval car compared to the Mercedes-AMG W13.
But...
Working on setups in iRacing is very challenging and requires a lot of sensitivity.
Changing even one parameter can drastically change your car, whether it’s a Formula car or a GT car.
You need a good understanding of setups if you don’t want to waste hours in the menu not knowing what to do.
How does the scoring system work?
First, you can race multiple times on the same track, but only 25% of your results will be counted.
This is essentially an average of your results for that week.
The higher the iRating of the session, the more championship points are available for each finishing position.
If you participate in a championship for at least eight weeks, you’ll be ranked.
Out of 12 weeks, your best eight results will be counted.
You can skip four events, but doing so means you won't be able to drop a bad result from one of the weeks you raced.
Now, we're confident that after reading this article, you’ll understand perfectly how a championship works on iRacing.
But remember, being competitive and fighting for the win on iRacing is very challenging.
Without knowing and applying the basics of driving, you'll struggle a lot and never beat your rivals.
That’s why you need to start a journey that will help you drive fast and without fear of making mistakes.
And the good news is that you can undertake this journey with us at UniSimRacing!
